When cooking feels too much after work…

Some evenings, the hardest part of the day isn’t work, it’s getting home.
You finally walk through the front door, put your keys down, take off your shoes… and stand in front of the fridge hoping something will magically appear.
You’re hungry. You’re tired. And somehow, even deciding what to eat feels like one decision too many.
If you’ve ever ended up eating cereal for dinner, ordered takeout because you couldn’t think straight, or simply skipped cooking altogether…I just want you to know you’re not the only one.
For a long time, I thought there was something wrong with me. I couldn’t understand why something as simple as making dinner felt so difficult after work.
Eventually, I realized it wasn’t really about cooking.

It’s not about cooking.

When we’ve spent the whole day making decisions, solving problems, replying to messages, talking to people, and rushing from one thing to the next, our brain gets tired too.
By the time we get home, we don’t just need food.
We need a moment to stop.
That’s why even the smallest tasks can suddenly feel overwhelming.
Not because they’re hard. Because we’ve already given so much of ourselves during the day.
I think we forget that mental energy is still energy, and once it’s gone, it’s okay to admit that.

I stopped asking myself one question.

I used to ask myself:
“What should I cook tonight?”
Most evenings, I didn’t have an answer.
Now I ask something different.
“What’s the kindest thing I can do for myself right now?”
Sometimes that means making pasta. Sometimes it means scrambled eggs on toast. Sometimes it means heating up leftovers. And yes…Sometimes it means ordering food without spending the next hour feeling guilty about it.Because taking care of yourself doesn’t always have to look the same.

Three things that have made my evenings feel easier

Keep one “no-thinking” meal at home.

Something you can make in ten minutes without following a recipe or making lots of decisions. On the days when your energy is low, you’ll be grateful it’s there.

Let simple be enough.

Not every dinner has to be healthy, beautiful, or worthy of a photo.A simple meal is still a real meal. You’re feeding yourself. That’s what matters.

Give yourself a few quiet minutes before doing anything.

Before you start cooking, before you clean, before you answer another message…Just sit down.Open a window.Take a deep breath.Let yourself arrive home. You don’t have to rush into the next thing the second you walk through the door.

Before you go

If cooking feels like too much today, I hope you don’t immediately think you’re lazy.
Maybe you’re simply tired, life isn’t made up of perfect evenings and homemade dinners every night. Some days, just getting through work is enough, and, on those days, taking the easier option doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it means you’re listening to what you need.
I hope tonight you choose whatever feels kindest to yourself, that will always be enough.
